divorced mother Rita Hardin of Atlanta, Ga., knows from experience how children can be hurt by tensions between the ex-spouses.
The relationship between Hardin and their ex-spouses were so tense that her ex has arrested a few times. One of her sons, third grader, has not yet learned to read and suffers from anxiety. Her first grade son has recently started a picture with a laser gun, which is about a world in which there are "no divorce," she says.
If a parent is for the divorce or already divorced, how can he or she is to avoid such situations?
First, get a good lawyer, whose philosophy is similar to your own, advises Stacy D. Phillips, a family law attorney and author of "Divorce: It's All About Control." If you do not want to fight in court, choose a lawyer who does not want court battles, she says.
Try to get out of court, she adds. "Refuse, in these wars."
However, if your ex is fighting them in court, you must respond. If, as Hardin, your ex-files, what feels like unfair and unnecessary temporary interim relief or other symptoms, you have to "wear the white hat," says Phillips.
"In a systematic manner, drawing the line. Be the best example," says Phillips. "When you return to the court that is as close to perfect as possible."
For example, if an interim order so you have to your ex and the children on certain days or in certain places, the provisions of the restraining order. Failure to comply with these rules will follow you into trouble, she says.
In addition, do not move to another state along with the Children's check-in without first with your ex, says Phillips.
"If a parent decides, from the state, he or she knows very well that it is a struggle," she says. "You have to decide whether it is worth the struggle."
Too often, the parents move to try to maintain control over their children, she says.
Remember, Phillips says, parents who let the courts decide on the fate of their children are engaged in a form of child abuse. You're in charge of control over your children to a complete stranger.
