Competition for admission to most law schools is intense. Interested attorneys should be proficiency in writing and speaking, reading, researching, analyzing, and thinking logically-skills needed to succeed in school and in the legal profession.
Regardless of major, a multidisciplinary background is recommended. Courses in German, foreign languages, rhetoric, government, philosophy, history, economics, mathematics and computer science, among others, are useful. Students with an interest in a particular aspect of the law courses will find helpful. For example, prospective patent lawyers need a strong background in engineering or science and future tax lawyers have extensive knowledge of accounting.
Acceptance by most law schools depends on the applicant's ability to demonstrate an aptitude for the study of law, usually through good undergraduate grades, the Law School Admission Test (LAST), the quality of the applicant's undergraduate school, prior work experience, and, sometimes, a personal interview.
In the first year or year and half of the Law School, students usually study core courses such as constitutional law, contracts, property law, tort law, civil procedure and legal writing. In the remaining time, they can be used in specialized areas such as tax, labor or corporate law. Law students gain practical experience, often through participation in school activities funded legal clinic in the school moot court competitions in which students conduct appellate arguments Panel, in practice trials under the supervision of experienced lawyers and judges as well as through research and writing on legal issues for the school magazine.

The practice of law involves a great responsibility. Individuals planning careers in law should like working with people and be able to gain the respect and confidence of its customers, employees and the public. Perseverance, creativity and skills are also for the lawyers, who often analyze complex cases and with new and unique legal problems.
Lawyers who have 695,000 jobs in 2002. About 3 out of 4 lawyers practiced privately either in law firms or in solo practices. Most of the remaining lawyers held positions in government and with businesses and nonprofit organizations.
